Setup

Divide players into two equal teams. Have each team line up facing each other, with players holding hands or linking arms. The teams should stand about 20 to 30 feet apart, depending on the space available.

Gameplay

1. The game begins with one team chanting, ‘Red Rover, Red Rover, send [player’s name] right over!’ The named player runs from their team to the other team’s line and tries to break through their linked arms.

2. The player chosen by the opposing team attempts to break through the linked arms of the other team. The player can choose where to attempt to break through the line based on where they see a weaker link.

3. If the player successfully breaks through the linked arms, they choose one player to take back to their team. If the player is unable to break through, they join the opposing team.

4. The game continues with teams taking turns calling players over until all the players are on one team.

Rules

  • Players must hold hands or link arms securely to create a strong barrier.
  • Players cannot move or separate once the game has started.
  • Players must run from a distance to build momentum before trying to break through the line.

Strategy

Forming a strong, unbreakable barrier is key to winning ‘Red Rover.’ Encourage your team to communicate and work together to anticipate where the opposing team will try to break through. Strong teamwork and coordination are essential in this game.

‘Red Rover’ is a thrilling and competitive game that promotes physical activity, teamwork, and strategic thinking. Gather your friends and family, head outdoors, and enjoy a spirited game of ‘Red Rover’ that will create lasting memories of fun and laughter!
