Want to Run Faster? 7 Athletics Tips That Can Make a Real Difference

Everyone wants to run faster, but most people keep shopping for magic when the answer is brutally unglamorous: speed is built, not wished into existence. The running world loves expensive shoes, viral drills, and mystical cadence talk, yet the athletes who actually get quicker tend to do a handful of simple things better than everyone else. Not prettier. Not trendier. Better.

1. Stop treating easy runs like a race

This is where many runners sabotage themselves. They run their easy days too hard, then wonder why their fast days feel like dragging a sofa uphill. If every session is a test, none of them are productive. Easy runs should be genuinely easy. That’s not laziness; that’s discipline. Aerobic development depends on recovery, and recovery is where speed quietly grows.

Rule of thumb: if you can’t speak in full sentences, you’re probably cheating the purpose of the run.

2. Train your sprint mechanics, not just your mileage

Distance runners often worship volume and ignore mechanics, which is a bit like owning a sports car and never learning how to steer. If you want to run faster, you need efficient movement: strong arm drive, tall posture, quick ground contact, and a relaxed face that says you know what you’re doing. Sprint mechanics aren’t just for 100-meter specialists. They improve economy for everyone.

  • Drive elbows back, not across your body
  • Keep your torso tall and stable
  • Land under your center of mass
  • Avoid overstriding like you’re reaching for a bus

3. Lift weights like you mean it

Yes, strength training matters. No, it won’t make you bulky and slow unless you’re eating and training like a bodybuilder. Stronger legs produce more force in less time, and that is literally the definition of running faster. The anti-gym crowd loves to pretend bodyweight drills are enough, but if you want real speed, you need real strength.

Focus on compound movements such as squats, deadlifts, lunges, hip thrusts, and calf raises. Better still, train explosively sometimes. Fast running is a power sport disguised as endurance.

4. Quit underestimating hills

Hills are the poor man’s speed workout, and that’s exactly why they work. They force better posture, stronger knee lift, and more forceful push-off without the same pounding you get on flat-out sprint repeats. If you want to get faster without living on the edge of injury, hills are one of the smartest tools in the box.

Short uphill sprints build raw power. Longer hill repeats build strength endurance. Both punish weak form and reward aggression. Which is why so many runners avoid them.

5. Practice fast running when you are fresh

This should be obvious, yet many athletes bury speed work at the end of exhausting sessions like an afterthought. Speed is a skill, and skills need quality. If you want your nervous system to learn how to move quickly, you need to rehearse fast running while your form is still sharp.

Try strides after easy runs, short sprints with full recovery, or dedicated speed sessions at the start of the workout. The goal is not to survive. The goal is to move well at speed.

6. Sleep more than your ego wants you to

If you want an unpopular truth, here it is: sleep is a performance enhancer. Not the sexy kind, not the expensive kind, but the kind that actually works. Faster runners recover faster, and recovery is impossible when you’re running on caffeine and denial. You do not adapt in the middle of a workout; you adapt afterward, when your body repairs itself.

Chronic sleep deprivation wrecks coordination, dulls reaction time, and makes every session feel harder than it should. People obsess over training plans and ignore the simplest legal performance tool available to them. That’s backwards.

7. Stop chasing random workouts and build consistency

The biggest myth in running is that one perfect workout will unlock speed. It won’t. The real breakthrough comes from stacking decent weeks, then better weeks, then enough weeks that your body has no choice but to change. Consistency beats novelty. Almost every time.

If your training is chaotic, your progress will be too. The runners who get faster are usually not the most gifted. They’re the ones who keep showing up, recovering properly, and repeating the right basics long enough for them to work.

  • Run regularly
  • Recover seriously
  • Strength train consistently
  • Do speed work with purpose
  • Be patient enough to improve

Running faster is not some secret handshake reserved for elite athletes. It is mostly about respecting the boring stuff that actually moves the needle. Better mechanics. Better recovery. Better strength. Better consistency. Less ego. Less chaos. More intent.

And if that sounds less exciting than a miracle training hack, good. The truth usually is.
